About Project
At the initiative of the staff of the Departments of Neurology and Psychiatry of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) and the Department of Gerontology and Palliative Care of the Alexandre Natishvili Institute of Morphology, the foundation was laid for the creation of a “Framework Concept” model for the National Dementia Program in Georgia and for supporting its implementation.
In December 2025, the initiative group, on behalf of the Academician Avlip Zurabashvili Psychiatric Association (with the support of memoranda signed with TSU and the “Pulse” television company), was awarded a government grant (LEPL State Grant Management Agency) to implement the project “Another Step Toward a Dignified Old Age (In Support of Establishing the National Dementia Program).”
The aim of the project is to create a “Framework Concept” model for the National Dementia Program in Georgia and to support its implementation — taking into account existing international experience, through information and educational interventions and by lobbying for the integration of the issue into state policy. The proposed project envisages supporting the institutionalization of the topic of dementia and its recognition as a priority issue at the national level. Within the framework of the project, specific recommendations will be developed for the further sustainable implementation of the National Dementia Program. The project will be carried out using an integrated approach that combines a research/analytical component, practical training, a public awareness campaign, and policy advocacy.
To achieve the project's aim, several sequential objectives have been defined:
-
Expert assessment of existing international experience in combating dementia (dementia management) and strategic planning;
-
Development of the conceptual framework of the National Dementia Program based on cooperation with all stakeholders.
-
"Bringing Dementia Out of the Shadows" — implementation of information and educational interventions aimed at raising public awareness about dementia;
-
Enhancing physicians' knowledge and qualifications regarding modern principles of dementia management.
-
Summarizing the results and initiating future dialogue: at the conclusion of the project, a summary analytical document and a package of recommendations will be prepared and submitted to state and professional structures.
The project will create a platform that unites society, professional expertise, and state resources, with the aim of ensuring that dementia does not become synonymous with personal and social abandonment in Georgia.
